La grotte de glace de l'Alpe d'Huez est "construite" après un gros travail d'accumulation de neige autour d'une "pré-forme de grotte" ensuite totalement recouverte. Ensuite vient le travail de sculpture de l'intérieur de la grotte. De nombreuses grottes de glace sont "fabriquées" et non creusées dans un glacier comme à la Mer de Glace.
